Graphics/Video Card

Postby Terzhus » Sat Aug 21, 2010 2:30 pm

Anyone have any recommendation for a new Graphics Card? Seems mine killed itself when I went on my trip to Washington for the week and now overheats within 5min of launching SC2.

I've used ATI cards for the last 8 years w/o issues, but I'm open to Geforce as well.

I'm open to any suggestions... don't really want to spend more then $400-500 on one.. though I may be willing to spend a little more if you have any suggestions for running 2 cards.

I was using a Radeon x1950 512mb... old card i was gonna upgrade for the next MMO, but looks like it will be making an early exit.

Geforce 460 man. I'd get that if I hadn't bought my 470 2 months earlier. Sweet deal, and it'll probably be around for long enough for you to go SLI when you need it.

GTX 460 is good but if you want better you could go with the 480 it's about $460 I think.

Or you could do two GTX 460's for the same price.

But for about $400 you could get the HD 5870 from ATI... that might be a better choice right now ATI is kickin ass.

Got the 460 today and installed. Runs great except for one issue. It seems to flicker every now and then when I play SC2 sometimes can last a couple seconds. I haven't tried it with any other games yet, and runs perfectly fine outside of games... Seems a few others have this issue as well but I haven't been able to find a solution yet :(

Pretty sure my card is just faulty. Tried the drivers that came with the card, latest drivers from nvidia, and drivers from omegadrivers.net which was recommended to me. All came to the same end result of flicers semi-often, some of which lasted up to 3-5seconds of a blank screen, and one crash due to display driver crash.

Gonna return it to newegg and go with one of these 3...

Gave GeForce a shot and now I regret it.. guess I'll stick with ATI.

So, I called the manufacturers and they had my run through some instructions/tests to narrow down what the issue was. I ended up running some program called furmark? Looks like the GPU has an overheating issue. I was supposed to run it for 60min but the card got up to 95C in 10min and made my comp restart.

So.. sent them an email back with what happened.. guess I'll see what happens in the morning.

He got a Galaxy. Can't say I've ever paid attention to them at all and I've rarely seen their products anywhere.

I would've suggested Evga, Palit, Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI... I don't know that I've ever heard of Galaxy. I recommend EVGA the most since I've dealt with their customer service several times and they don't seem to be complete morons.

Either way he'll get more out of the ATI 5870 I bet...
