Windows 8 - ugh

Postby Cerb » Fri Aug 16, 2013 12:15 pm

An associate of mine came in today with a windows 8 laptop.

Screen looks like, keyboard looks nice... in general it looks nice.

Functionality sucks though..
1. can't disable that stupid interface with the 800 little window things happening on it.

2. No Start menu, so if you prefer to operate in the desktop environment, they made it more difficult

3. All programs made for windows 8 stay full screen, so if you like to run several windows in windowed mode, at this point I haven't seen how to do it. In short, it sucks. Have to run older versions of MS Office for example if you want your windowed mode button and such.

My opinion of Windows 8 is that it wouldn't be a bad interface for a tablet, but for a desktop or laptop it so far doesn't work for me.

There are ways to get the regular desktop/start menu interface. I haven't used win 8 though but I've seen it myself. It is built in and I think there are add ons you can get too that make it even more like win 7.

Win 8 is a disaster of UI design. OS is actually more solid than 7 but usability is a joke. Totally broken to support "touch" interface. Which also doesn't work if you have a Surface.

I have my Win7 box tweaked pretty hard to function more like Windows XP.

I dislike the basic 7 interface:
pinning crap instead of a quicklaunch bar (I added that back)
Networking not default to find other computers and make sharing easy
Many menus were hidden making advanced features harder to find

8 Went the direction 7 was headed, and I didn't like the direction 7 was headed, so 8 was angry time right when I saw it.

I've used Win8 on my work laptop for 9 months. It's fine once you get one of the start menu replacement apps. I use Start8. It restores the start menu and makes it configurable and you can set it to load directly to desktop mode so you never have to see the "Modern UI" garbage.

Thought the fist service pack was supposed to being back the start menu? I won't touch 8 for another year or 2 at least though.

Any reason besides UI stuff to not get Win 8? I'm tempted to put it on my machine since I can get a free copy through my school...

Aside from the UI stuff, which can be fixed with the start menu replacement apps, Win8 is a not insignificant performance upgrade to Win7. A lot of the system management stuff is much improved(the file transfer for one is much better, I no longer feel the need to use teracopy of something like that).
